De Wijkrechter — Visual Identity for Community Justice

In collaboration with the Court of Amsterdam (de Rechtspraak) and the Municipality of Amsterdam (Gemeente Amsterdam), we developed a visual communication style and identity to introduce and inform residents in Amsterdam Southeast (Venserpolder) and New-West about the Wijkrechter (the community judge). This new initiative brings accessible, inclusive justice directly into the community, helping residents resolve small but impactful legal issues — from debt and family conflict to truancy and minor offenses — with a holistic, people-focused approach.

The challenge was to make this unfamiliar concept visible and understandable for a diverse audience. Seven themed illustrations were created for residents, explaining how the community judge works and what support is available. For professionals and organisations in the area, a process visuals was developed to outline how to collaborate with the Wijkrechter.

To reflect the multicultural makeup of Amsterdam Southeast and Nieuw-West, all visuals were produced in Dutch, English, Spanish, Turkish, and Arabic, and designed to be responsive for both digital and print use.
